OUR HISTORY

The Island Rangers program is a collaboration between Mosaic Forest Management (Mosaic) and a dedicated group of outdoor enthusiasts, who together saw an opportunity for safe and responsible access to Mosaic private forest lands.

The goal from the outset was to establish the presence of trained ‘Island Rangers’ on Mosaic forest lands, who would not only set an example for others in safe and responsible access, but also carry out ‘observe and report’ duties on a volunteer basis. It was three years in the making, but today the Island Rangers and Mosaic operate under a formal Access Agreement that was signed March 2, 2020.

The Island Rangers are not security personnel, but do act as eyes and ears on the ground, reporting any incidences of illegal activity (including theft, vandalism, dumping or damage to the environment) on Mosaic forest lands.

Island Rangers pay annual dues to the Island Rangers Society and complete a Mosaic Safety Course and instruction in radio-use before taking on volunteer duties on Mosaic forest lands. In exchange for their volunteer time, Island Rangers have conditional access to designated areas of Mosaic forest lands on weekdays.

Island Rangers is a registered non-profit that was established as a Society under the Societies Act. on May 14, 2019. Originally a group of about twenty, the Island Rangers today number over 600.

Mosaic and the Island Rangers are proud partners in safe access to Mosaic private forest lands.
